Some days ago we were invited to participate at the conference 'Voskopoja, the next door', organized by the association 'Tradite dhe Zhvillim' (tradition and development) and financed by SCP in the Western Balkans. The conference was focused on development of tourism at Voskopoja and the need of cooperation for a better quality of promotion. Among the participants were representing from the Ministry of Integration, SCP office Tirana and the local government of Macedonian cities of Ohrid and Struga. The photo documentation of the activity was done by Violeta Lleshi, student of Projekt 5.6.
We want to share with you our emotions during our stay at Voskopoja, well known in Albania for the wonderful frescoes of the medieval painter David Selenicasi and the rich tradition in culture and style of life.

'The More We Get Together'-The winner project by Zhao Renhui from Singapor

In the right: 'The misery's home'- photo project of Arian Vyshka, Albania, the winner of the scolarship for the course of photography at Projekt 5.6 school.

For all the authors and the lovers of Sotiri 2009, who had no possibility to join the opening of the exhibition, here there are some photos of the exhibition area. Thank you to Harri Pàlviranta, the curator of the exhibition, thank you to Stratos Kalafatis, Ivan Blazhev and Natasha Lako, jury members, thank you to Maks Velo, Ben Blushi, Natasha Lako and Kristina Sotiri for the spoken and visual material on Korca in the panel discussion and thank you to Leonard for these photos of the works.

Panel discussion of three foreign photographers at Korca

Stratos Kalafatis from Greece, Harri Palviranta from Finland and Ivan Blazhev from Macedonia presented their works at the panel discusion organized in the frame of Sotiri Prize activity this evening at 5 p.m. in the gallery space in Korca.
The present public was informed about their works and projects, and asked questions to the artists.

This was the final activity of Sotiri Prize event in Korca.

We will meet again next year, at May 2010.
Until then prepare your projects for the interantional competition Sotiri 2010! We are looking for them!

Sotiri2009 -Panel discussion

Today at 10 a.m. at the culture palace Vangjush Mio of Korca, it was organized the panel discussion , titled 'Korca through images'. The Mayor of the Korca city, Mr. Niko Peleshi was present during all the activiy. The lecturer were Maks Velo, well known artist and architect; Ben Blushi, writer, member of the Albanian parliament; Natasha Lako, poet , former director of the Albanian National Film archive. The granddaughter of the photographer Kristaq Sotiri participated with a PowerPoint presentation of the life of the great photographer.
The public showed great interest for the panel.

At 5 p.m. it will be the second part of the panel, with the presentation of teh work of teh curator Harri Plaviranta, and jury members: Ivan Blazhev, and Stratos Kalafatis.

At the 6 p.m of Saturday 2009, at the gallery Guri Madhi in Korca was the opening of the exibition 'A touch of Violence',an international competition for young photographers, curated by the Finn artist Harri Pälviranta. The organizer of the activity is Cultural centre Lindart in Tirana. The activity is organized in the frame of the Projekt 5.6, supported by the Swiss Cultural Program in the Western Balkans. The exhibition and panel discussion Sotiri 2009 was organized in partnership with the Municipality of Korca, and the support of Intesa SanPaolo Bank.

For the second time the city of Korca honor the photographer Kristaq Sotiri through the photographies of young photographers from all round the world. 67 young photographers from 5 continents applied for the competition Sotiri. 15 projects were selected.

And the winner of the First Prize Sotiri 2009 was the young photographer from Singapor Zhao Renhui.

Tomorrow we will show you more photos about the space and feelings of the exhibition, about the panel discussion as well.

Ekspozita Sotiri eshte ne fazen perfundimtare te pergatitjes. Dje pasdite filloi punen edhe juria, e cila do te jape mendimin e saj sot.
Ketu jane disa foto nga puna e jurise dhe nga caste pushimi te saj . Po emri i fituesit do te jepet ne ceremonine e hapjes, nga kryetari i Bashkise se Qyteti te Korces, sepse eshte Bashkia Korce qe e jep cmimin e pare.

Ndersa cmimi i dyte do jepet nga Banka Intesa San Paolo ne Tirane.

The exhibition Sotiri is still in the process of installation. And the jury started the work yesterday, and today they will define the name of the winner of Sotiri 2009. But you will know the name of the winner only at the opening ceremony. It has the honor to do the declaration of the winner's name the Mayor of Korca, mr. Niko Peleshi.
The second Prize will be supported by the Intesa San Paolo Bank Albania.

At 23 may 2009 at the gallery of arts in Korca it will be the opening of the international competition for young photographers 'Sotiri', after the name of the romantic photographer from Korca Kristaq Sotiri. We will inform you every day about the preparation of the activity, that include a panel discussion, on Sunday 24 May.

I am posting another conversation which I had with Bevis Fusha recently. Bevis Fusha is one of the most interesting photographers of so called “New Europe", coming from Albania Bevis has witnessed and reported the slow and complicate change of his country. He has focused his work in different social aspect also experimenting concept topics. He also is represented by Regina Anzenberger Agency. Again as for Max Sher I do like to speak about photographers who can develop and see something different in the countries they are born, something that is for many photographers quite challenging.

Here is the conversation with Bevis:

DM: You are perhaps one of the few who could translate the last historical period of your country into photographs although you were born in a photographer's family. What were the most difficult thing to face when you start to take photos?

BF: I grew up in the dark room of our small apartment in the center of Tirana. I spent my childhood in the corner of the room, under the pale red light impatiently waiting for my father to finish his work so I could leave and play outside with my bike. My interest in photography started in the adolescent years. Actually, during that year, photographing people seemed boring and very ordinary for me, something that anyone in the world could do. Our house was always filled with ORWO films, Kodak slides, 35 mm cameras, medium format, large format, photo papers, dryers, solvents and everything else that was in the function of the image. My father, Besim Fusha, was one of the best and most valued photographers of his time and I would like to add that he was one of the most intelligent who had the ability to unintentionally serve the communist regime this way providing for his family by using a 50 mm objective and a Practica ML. During that time I found my self looking at images more, and looking means a lot, more than technically viewing the camera. What I can say is that around 1995 I started using Canon F1 camera and I found no difficulties getting used to it, meaning technically. It was part of the family. Taking the camera in my hands, professionally, was natural and happened very quickly.

DM: I believe you have a good numbers of projects done; my favorites are "A slow motion death", Isolation although I do like your "color" approach. What make you "think" in black and white and in "color"?

BF: Photography is a multi dimensional and flexible generator of my life. My educational relationship has been connected to the camera. It has taken many years for me to create a powerful visual language. The camera itself has become an expressive tool these last 10 years, to present events that are connected to the society I live in and are of genuine interest of mine. In my beginnings I used color film because I felt that with black and white I had already created a close relationship to the point that it had become personal and familiar. Coloristic memory was very important as a shortcut of humanistic association.

DM: How you see photojournalism these days?

BF: In a way it is interesting. I believe that the collective interests of the photographers have been transformed in an uncontrolled organic process. Personal and individual interests are those that attempt to keep photojournalism unaffected. There will be advancements in the technical distribution of information in a world that’s getting smaller and there will be attempts to break away from regulations set by the predecessors. There won't be any vanguard changes unless the old system can be infiltrated. The difficulty is in the fact that all media is influenced, it is very obvious. Almost all publishers, authors, amateur or professional have an agenda, a mission. There are no more people who do something with naivety. It seems that naivety has been buried in primitive centuries. Any agenda is spiritual, religious, political or corporation, or a complicated combination of these elements. The worst scenario is when it is all the above, where photography many times willingly or unwillingly becomes a manipulated servant. I think that a triumphant formula for the future would be a sensitive subject presentation with a perfect esthetic-visual storytelling. Photography has always been a good way to allow the viewer to interpret the inside of what he/she sees. Each person takes what they want from an image and in successful cases; all of us take away what we should. The goal will be achieved by hyperbolizing the core.

DM: I would like if you speak more about Albania and how mean to work there and what is going on.

BF: My photography is not specifically connected with the geography of places, even though my major contribution is in Albania, the place of my origin and where I currently live. I have been and still am an outside vision of reality, a wanderer. In each journey photography flows as an element of my presentation. My id is untouchable. It remains with me and exist as a
result of my logic. In journeys photography holds a second place. First of all there is my facing of the world, and then what I learn, which feeds my photography. Distances and spaces fill me with fear, photography helps me familiarize myself with what I learn and leave behind. Such photographic observation comes instinctively to me. It is traces of my childhood that come back in more mature steps, as the years go by. In the beginning, when I entered the media market, I was looking for my fame and name, but nowadays, my motives are different. I am a spectator, a messenger, a murderer of the moment that tries to give life to eternity. I feel that my duty as a messenger is to continue forward and be asinvisible and unimportant as possible. Motivation, determination, patience, curiosity and the truth are some elements that keep you attached to the photographic image. The photography that I capture is often anti-television in its structure, in an attempt to oppose the enormous indoctrination that TV is feeding our lives, by transmitting to us news and images that have a superficial meaning. Albania has a small number of photographers; therefore "my war" takes on a sublime meaning. Also, I prefer to believe in the uniqueness of things in life. Nothing can be repeated in a photo, even when moments are recreated. I don't discover the importance of the photo at the moment of capture, but after, while I feel it as it is. What photo can be created as absolutely perfect? On
the contrary; what is not photographed is what contains the DNA of the absolute and perfect! I have doubts of the rightful moment of an image. I think that values in time are clearly understandable in the hundreds of seconds and achieve their importance in their solitude. Of course there are cases when I go back to subjects and follow them for some time, for other interests, and I never find the same situations, there is always a continuous movement. Also, it should be kept in mind that I use photography to document something, I do not attempt to be an artist and I do not worry to find the specifying category. I don't believe in the elite, but the individuals. The Albanian society has surprised me with its paradoxes, with completely medieval phenomenon that would make it noticeable in all Europe. I think that it is a good place to further study what awes me. I want to be a witness of what I see and all this is also a question to myself and to what I share with my photography. I worry of what I will leave behind to the coming generations, I don't know how to respect the present but the future and I am a fanatic visionary. Photography has the most universal and primary role in communication, something I use and want to go deeper in. I still have faith of the value of photography and always will. I would like to be absolute in this.

DM: What is your next project?

BF: I am working on a project that will be quite boring and will have also a boring exhibition. It will be the capturing of very ordinary, unimportant places for anyone, almost places where nothing happens, but hide a dimensional path, a gate toward death. This is a project that is distant and I have overcome some difficulties that have forced me to slowly work on it. Maybe I won't be able to finish it in the time I have set for myself.

Dhoma e erret ... sigurisht qe nuk ishte hera e pare per studentet tane te ishin atje, pasi deri tani ata kane zhvilluar disa negative, por ajo qe ishte me emocionuesja dhe qe ishte per here te pare, ishte stampimi i filmave te cilet ata vete i kishin zhvilluar. Nuk e di sa do ta kuptoni ... por ishte shume e kendshme ... dhe shume eresire :)))

Beeing in the dark room, it was not the first time for our students. But, it was the first stamp to print what they have shoot before. It was really fun fun fun, but alsow very dark dark dark ... :)))

Jemi shume te kenaqur me fillimin e kurseve te ketij viti ne Projekt 5.6. Mesimi ka nisur diten e hene me profesorin Nikolin Baba, i cili eshte nje nga mjeshtrat e fotografise shqiptare, me nje pervoje te gjate ne fushen e fotografise, te nisur qe ne vitet 1970. Ai eshte autor i nje serie katalogesh mbi thesaret e arkeologjise dhe etnografise shqiptare.

This Monday we were very satisfied meeting new students of the course 2009. The new students are really fond of photography.
The classes start this Monday under the direction of the trainer Nikolin Baba. He is a professional photographer, and he started his career as a photographer from the earlier years 1970. He is the author of some series of catalogues about Albanian archaeological and ethnographic treasures, published by Archaeological museum and the Institute of Folk culture in Tirana.
Very soon you can also see the first photo work from our students.

World Press Photo 2009 / Cmimi i "Fotos se Shtypit Boteror 2009

U zgjodh ne Amsterdam, fotoja fituese e konkursit te pervitshem te World Press Photo. Fituesi Anthony Suau, u perzgjodh mes 96,268 imazhesh sjelle nga 5.508 fotografe nga e gjithe bota. Fotografi Suau, fitoi po ashtu cmimin e dyte ne kategorine e historise "Jeta e Perditshme" me nje foto histori per temen e krizes ekonomike qe ka prekur Ameriken ne 2008. Kjo foto e marre ne Mars 2008, teksa ishte duke punuar nje histori fotografike per revisten "Time" tregon nje oficer policie i cili kontrollon nese qera-marresit e kane braktisur shtepine ne afatin e percaktuar per arsye te mos pageses se saj. Fotoja u perzgjodh per shkak te impaktit te saj simbolik qe ka ne ditet e sotme tek cdokush nga ne si nje imazh qe ne pamje te pare te kujton luften por qe eshte thjesht nje moment i zakonshem dhe trondites ne ditet tona dhe ne te ardhmen e cdokujt.

Ishte nje nder i madh per ne si staf i Projekt 5.6 por edhe per profesionistet e fotografise te kishim ne Foto Bar fotografin kroat Ivo Pervan. Pas nje ekspozite te interesante ne te cilen kishte shume pjesemarres, zoti Pervan pati nje diskutim me te afert me koleget e tij fotografe ne galerine e Projekt 5.6, ne te cilen u projektuan edhe disa DVD me pune te ketij autori.

Kam vite që nuk dërgoj kartolina, bile as nuk marr... Kam vite qe kam humbur cdo lloj emocioni ne letërkëmbime apo zarfa postalë te kësaj natyre.
Kur Soela më kerkoi si pjesë e kolegëve për të ndihmuar në zgjedhjen e kartolinës më të bukur dërguar nga ju, vendosa të shkruaj dicka për më tepër; meqe ajo e bën rrallë këtë, vendosa të hedh ketu dicka përpara se sa të fle...

Gjithë këtë javë jam përpjekur të sjell forcërisht ndërmend se kur mund të ketë qenë hera e fundit që kam nisur një kartolinë.. Dhe nuk sjell dot asgjë ndërmend... Bile forcërisht po përpiqem të gjej kuptimin se cfarë është një kartolinë, dhe KUR; një imazh fotografik mund të perdoret për një kartolinë ???
Sigurisht tek këto pergjigje mbetem i pagojë, dhe sidomos tani, 03.18 AM, thellësisht i përgjumur.. POR ... me kërshërine më të madhe per tju degjuar ju....
Dhe ju keni folur me imazhet tuaja, të cilat i kam ndjekur pa gjetur ende një përgjigje !

A mund të jetë vallë kartolinë ; Një qen anonim? Një memorje personale e stinës verore ? Një abstraksion koloristik? Apo rrugë të humbura në Europë? Nje adoleshente e panjohur ??

Cfarë është vallë nje kartolinë ??!!! Cfarë percjell? Cfare sjell? Cfarë dërgon?

POR, pa i hyre filozofisë e cila nuk ju pëlqen....Studentë te dashur, ju e dini që unë pres më tepër,
Ornela, Blerta, Brilanta, te tjerë, të gjithë ju... studente te shkollës apo dashamirës...

Synimi ynë nuk është thjesht e vetëm të gjejmë nje foto te bukur, as të nisim një urim.. por tju vëmë të MENDONI, të LEVIZNI, të KAPERCENI përtej ballkonit të shtepisë, të FOTOGRAFONI, të percillni më tepër se sa një foto e bukur, më tepër se një mesazh, te "ngrini" nje domethënie aty, të përjetëshme...
